Catie was our Student of the Week this past week. She has told us so much about her and it's been fun learning. She brought in a favorite story that we read as a class. She shared lots of her dolls and these were a big hit! We are amazed at how many siblings she has and pets at home. She has 7 siblings and 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 goat! WOW! When Catie grows up she wants to be an artist. One last thing Catie shared was that her favorite part of Kindergarten was when our class won the Power Pop Recess and earned a blow pop sucker :)
The Super U! Challenge came to Hamilton Elementary on Wednesday. This was an interactive show that was designed to capture the feel of family television game shows, such as Minute To Win It and the classic Nickelodeon show, Double Dare. During the program, students from the audience were invited to participate in fun challenges using costumes, funny props, and even some SLIME! Maddie and Alyssa were picked as a volunteer from our classroom! Too fun (pictures below)! Each challenge in the show was based on positive behavior/character building traits that promote respecting others, building trust, and choosing words and actions. The overall theme of the show is that kids have the ability to make choices that contribute to making the school great, strengthen friendships and stop bullying behavior. We have been doing such a great job at writing! Writer's Workshop has quickly become one of our favorite parts of our day. We have been learning to listen to the beginning sounds in our words and label our stories. We have been thinking of our own story ideas and sharing these with our peers. When we share, we have the opportunity for other students to comment with something they notice or wonder about their picture.
Also, in some of these pictures above you might notice students using their ABC Chart. We are using this as a tool to help us remember our letters and sounds in our writing. We learned so much about Jayden this week. It was great to see her open up and share with us :) Jayden is such a respectful and quiet girl. We learned she loves the colors pink and purple, she loves Mac & Cheese, and she loves playing the Wii. Her favorite Wii game is Tangled. She brought in some pictures of her family to share. She also brought the book Monarch Butterfly to read with us. Thanks for a great week Jayden!
I wanted to share some pictures on what we worked on last week during Math RtI, which is every Monday and Thursday. We have 4 stations:
1. Working with Mrs. Ley 2. Working with Mrs. G (our paraprofessional) 3. Working independently 4. Computers At our station with Mrs. Ley we practiced counting and number recognition from numbers 1-30. At our station with Mrs. G we practiced writing our numbers 0-2. Some of us went on to numbers 3 and 4 if we finished in time :) We practiced these on our magnadoodles and on lined paper to show where our numbers needed to fall on our lines. At our independent station we practiced patterns. Some of us did AB patterns, some did ABC, and some even produced AABB! At the computers we played a pattern math game. Keilah is a joy to have in class! We've learned lots about her this week. Her favorite color is pink, her favorite food is chicken nuggets, and her favorite T.V. show is Dora the Explorer. We also found out that she has NINE PEOPLE IN HER FAMILY! Wow! How fun! Thanks Keilah for sharing more about yourself. We enjoyed getting to know you more.
This is the reading and writing program we have begun implementing in our classroom. The choices are:
1. Read to Self 2. Work on Writing 3. Word Work 4. Read to Someone 5. Listen to Reading We have begun Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Read to Someone. We have been using our "Just Right" book boxes, whisper phones, and finding cozy spots in the room to focus. We have been practicing building our reading stamina and writing stamina. We started small with 2 minutes of reading and we are now up to 8 minutes of reading independently and with a partner. We know there are 3 ways to read a book: 1. Read the pictures 2. Read the words 3. Retell what we read Yay to our wise owls! We have been working so hard. Here are some pictures. We had so much fun at our Hawkeye Hustle! It was a gorgeous day to be able to run, skip, dance, etc. outside around the track jamming to some fun tunes! We worked up quite the appetite after all that exercise and were given cold water, apples, and yummy kettle corn!
Congratulation to Johnny Sisson in our class who raised the most money in our grade level! He gets to eat lunch with Mrs. Klomparens (our principal) at the Hawk's Nest with some of our other winners! Way to go Johnny! |
